New Research Highlights Ideal Betta Fish Tank Size for UK Fish Owners
For decades, betta fish — also known as Siamese fighting fish — have often been sold and displayed in small jars or cups. However, new research shows that keeping betta fish in tiny containers can seriously impact their wellbeing. A study published in Animal Welfare found that most bettas are housed in containers around one-quarter of the size they actually need to live healthily. This calls into question long-standing practices in the ornamental fish trade worldwide and highlights the importance of providing a proper Betta fish tank.
Researchers observed 13 male bettas in five different housing setups, ranging from tiny 1.5-litre jars to larger 19.3-litre Betta fish tanks. Some Betta fish tanks were bare, while others included gravel, live plants, and hiding places — all essential components of good Betta fish care.
The results were striking. Bettas in larger Betta fish tanks were far more active, swimming an average of 92 seconds longer during observation sessions, and showed more natural behaviours like exploring and foraging. Environmental enrichment also made a significant difference. When given decorated Betta fish tanks, the fish used shelters and plants for nearly half their resting time instead of floating in open water.
Lead author Professor Culum Brown of Macquarie University in Australia emphasized that existing care guidelines often focus only on water quality while overlooking the behavioural and welfare needs of betta fish.
Based on these findings, the research team recommends that bettas in stores should be displayed in Betta fish tanks no smaller than 5.6 litres, with even larger Betta fish tanks for home care. Every Betta fish tank should include gravel, plants, and hiding spots to promote natural behaviour and reduce stress.
